A Short Biography

Born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Steve has always been rooted in the state's culture and heritage. From an early age, he had a love for the landscapes, the rich history, and the spirit of the people that call this land home.


Steve pursued a higher education at SDSU, BHSC, University of Montana, and ASU where he studied Political Science and History with an eye for Law School. This academic journey taught Steve how to think critically and independently. Steve was instilled with a sense of social justice from an early age…which instilled in him a desire to drive positive change and progress in South Dakota. While in University Steve was a ski instructor, a carpenter, and held a number of other jobs that taught Steve to appreciate how people work, how they think and how they feel about how they live their lives.


After completing his education, Steve embarked on a career in sporting goods, then in Advertising. He owned his business with his father who had been involved in politics in South Dakota starting in the 70’s. His father had worked with Kneip and other influential Democrat leaders in the State…in other words Steve was steeped in the politics of South Dakota. Steve has been involved in local businesses, advocating to create a beneficial business environment, preserving the state's natural beauty, and advocating for the well-being of South Dakotans from all walks of life.

Steve started his own business in 2002 as a Commercial Real estate Broker and remains a Broker today. Steve Natz Commercial Real Estate.

Steve raised three sons in Sioux Falls. They all attended public schools in the city. 2 at Roosevelt and one at Lincoln. His oldest lives in Sioux Falls and two live in Missoula, Montana.


Steve’s commitment to South Dakota led him to engage with various community organizations and volunteer activities, which created a dedicated advocate for the state and its people. He has demonstrated his capacity for leadership, empathy, and innovative thinking.


Outside of his professional responsibilities, Steve cherishes the simple joys of life in South Dakota. Steve recreates on the prairies of South Dakota hunting, fishing, riding bicycles (mountain, road and electric) and takes great pleasure in exploring the hidden gems scattered across the state – from the east to the Black Hills to the Missouri River. Julie, his life partner, and Steve enjoy traveling to out of the way places to ride bike and camp in a cargo van converted to an RV.


Steve remains deeply committed to the prosperity and well-being of South Dakota, and has a devotion to the state's values and aspirations. Steve is working to inspire others to join in the journey to build a brighter future for South Dakota, one rooted in unity, opportunity, and unwavering pride in the state's unique identity.
